Elephant Ride

Located near Thorntree Lodge, approximately 10 km from Livingstone, Zambezi Elephant Trails has established Zambia’s first “Elephant Camp” – offering a once in a lifetime insight into these gentle giants. Together with this ecologically friendly method of game viewing, a strong emphasis is placed on an Elephant experience rather than just an Elephant ride and guests are encouraged to interact with these majestic and intelligent African mammals. The training techniques used by Zambezi Elephant Trails are based on the positive reinforcement method as opposed to the controversial “discipline and submission” technique commonly associated with Asian Elephants.

Upon arrival to the bush site, the Head Guide will give a short introductory talk including safety aspects. The guests will then be introduced to the Elephants and their guides.

On mounting the Elephants, the Safari begins. The trails lead through riverine bush and the banks of the Zambezi River, the ride lasts for 1 hour. On completing the ride, guests will dismount and interact with the Elephants on the ground.

Chobe Day Trip

The Chobe day trip sets off early morning headed for Chobe National Park in Botswana. Guests will be transferred by vehicle to the Kazungula border which is the border post between Zambia and Botswana a distance of 70km – here your Botswana Guide will meet you.

Once you are through the border post you will be taken straight to the Chobe River, where you will spend the morning game viewing from a cruise boat.

The morning cruise ends at around about lunch and you will then be taken to a hotel on the riverbank for lunch.

After lunch you will get on a safari vehicle for an afternoon game drive in the Chobe National Park where you will have an opportunity to enjoy an abundance of wildlife.

After the game drive, you will be taken back to the Kazungula border, where you will be met by your return transfer to Livingstone, arriving at approximately 18.30hrs

Depending on guests and circumstances, some Chobe Day trips may do the game drive in the morning and the Boat cruise in the afternoon.

Rafting

Commercial rafting first started on the Zambezi River in 1981 and since then this activity has grown in popularity to the point where a rafting trip on the Zambezi is now a regular feature in many tourist itineraries, and is now internationally acclaimed as the best one day white water rafting trip available in the world.

The Zambezi River is classified as a high volume; pool-drop river i.e. there is little exposed rock either in the rapids or the pools below the rapids. The distance between rapids varies from 100 meters to 2 km’s. The Gorge itself is approximately 400ft deep at the put-in point and 750ft at the take out point. The river drops about 400ft over the 24km covered in the one-day raft trip and the depth of the river can reach 200ft. The morning section of the river is classified as Grade 5 “extremely difficult, long and violent rapids, steep gradients, big drops and pressure areas”. The afternoon section is slightly less challenging and is of a lower grade.

There are different options for rafting depending on the time of year and clients requirements, please see below for details.

The “High Water” Rafting Season runs approximately from the middle of January to the beginning of August, depending upon the water level each year. Please note that rafting can close between January and June for safety reasons due to water levels being too high.

The “Low Water” Rafting Season runs approximately from the middle of July to the middle of January, depending upon the water level each year this can change as and when levels increase or decrease.

The popularity of the Low Water Rafting run on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River is both due to the opportunity of experiencing the incredible view of the Victoria Falls from the Boiling Pot and the added advantage of a lift out of the gorge at rapid #25

Helicopter Rides

Nothing compares to observing and experiencing the impressive Victoria Falls from the air. As Dr David Livingstone eloquently jotted down in his diary in 1855: ‘scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in flight’. A mile wide (1708 metres), the Victoria Falls are the world’s largest curtain of falling water.

The 12-minute helicopter rides provide an outstanding photographic opportunity to capture the full breadth of Victoria Falls, the islands and neighbouring rainforests. It’s absolutely amazing to witness how spray blasts out of the chasm as the full volume of the Zambezi crashes down 108 metres.

The 25-minute game flights continue down to the Batoka Gorge and offer an opportunity to spot wildlife from the sky as well as take in the beautiful scenery of the Batoka Gorge. You’ll witness the wildlife areas of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park (Zambia).

Flights take place every day (weather permitting) from dawn to sunset.
